The Great Salt Plains

Our friends invited us for a weekend trip that started with a trip to the Great Salt Plains
We left after a big ihop breakfast and headed off to the land of sand and.......sand.
It had recently rained, so the ground was wet and muddish. It made it harder to find crystals, but we managed all right.
Step 1: Dig a hole

Step 2: Pour water into the hole and feel around for hard pieces - crystals!
We were pretty excited that we had found these salt crystals. Looking back, we laugh.
Evan found a couple in this hole!

The impressive salt crystals we had before were completely obliterated by Emma's giant cluster!
So, we all dug holes close to Emma's, so we could find bigger ones. (They say that where you find one, there's more)
And, they were right.
Thanks, daddy, for diggin them holes!
 As usual, our self portrait...
Some of our crystals...

Emma kept digging ALL. day. long.
Evan and the boys LOVED the endless sand. They ran and ran and ran (and I never lost sight of them!!)

After a long (dirty!) day, we headed into Kansas to our home for the night. I can't remember the name of the motel, but it was cute and cozy, and had PINK tile in the bathroom! LOVE!
(notice the blue bucket of crystals in the bottom of the photo - those were only Emma's part of the loot...)

We were all happy to shower and rest, even if our van would have to wait a bit longer.
